Le genre post-apocalyptique est généralement considéré comme un
sous-genre de la science-fiction, caractérisé par la destruction de la civilisation par une grande catastrophe : explosion ou guerre
nucléaire, catastrophe naturelle (météorite, astéroïde, tornade, volcan), épidémie, crise économique et énergétique, invasion d'extra-terrestres, etc... Le récit post-apocalyptique prend place dans le monde d’après le cataclysme, là où les survivants doivent refaire leur vie au péril de multiples dangers.
La véritable naissance du genre est venue dans les années suivant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, alors que la menace de la destruction du monde semblait bien réelle pour plusieurs bien que quelques ouvrages aient été écrits bien plus tôt, notamment le superbe roman de Mary Shelley The Last Man.
Le Post-nuke, souvent tourné aux Philippines ou en Italie, connut son heure de gloire dans les années 80/90, plagiant sans complexe des films comme Mad Max et New York 1997.
